Lili Reinhart may be killing it as Betty Cooper on Riverdale, but the star has faced her own set of personal challenges along the way.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Reinhart opened up about her struggles with acne and self-confidence.
Lili explained how her chronic acne took a major toll on her when she was younger. She said,
“The first time I got acne, I was in seventh grade and it made me develop a form of body dysmorphic disorder. Actually, there is a specific kind of BDB associated with acne. Every time I have a big cystic pimple or something, it very much triggers that part of me where I don’t want to look at myself in the mirror. It’s hard to take pictures of myself, I don’t want to go out in public, and I want to hide my face.”
She added that she certainly still struggles with acne and the mental toll it can take, but she’s become more accepting of her situation.
“As I’ve gotten older, it’s a matter of realizing that I can’t let a pimple on my face decide what I do and where I go. Finding a skin routine that works for me helps.”
So, what skin routine does work for her?
“I try a little bit of everything, to be honest. When my skin is breaking out pretty bad, I try to leave it alone as much as I can. I don’t want to pack on product after product, I think that makes it worse and kind of overwhelms your skin. I try to just let the breakout happen and wait for the inflammation to die down.”
Honestly, very sound advice. As a fellow acne sufferer, I’ve heard so many mixed things from doctors, estheticians, and beauty gurus, it’s hard to know the right move. It’s good to use the right blend of products for your daily routine, but not overdo it when you have a breakout. It worsens the breakout more often than not.
Lili also explained that when she’s not on set getting all dolled up to portray Betty, she actually doesn’t do much with her hair or makeup.
“I don’t do a full face because my skin needs to breathe. When I’m not filming, I try to let it breathe.”
Also good advice! It can be tempting to slather on a full face of makeup when a flare-up strikes, but that will only clog the pores further, and lengthen the duration of the breakout. Try to just apply cover-up to the worst spots, and let your skin breathe when possible.
We’re glad that Lili is opening up about her struggle with her skin. With such a negative stigma against acne, it’s nice when someone in the spotlight relates and can offer their tips that don’t include going to a luxury facialist.
